So...
w/ Jean Grae
by Senyo_Twilight
One of the more entertaining personalities in music, Jean Grae is at it again with her latest effort with the Cookies or Comas mixtape, a Gangsta Grills project hosted by DJ Drama.
Jean has always been notorious for her erudite lyrics which play out like an ivy league stand up set when she’s in her zone. Sarcasm abound, she put yours truly in the hot seat on Twitter by saying she had two previous interviews and warning that I’d, “BETTER NOT FUCK UP THE STREAK.”
Luckily for all Jean Greasy-lovers, the good folks at H.A.S. Magazine were able get a hold of her for some brief insight into her latest offering.
"I definitely wanted to have Cookies or Comas out there as a reminder...Just so you motherfuckers don’t complain. I'm reminding you that I will eat you the fuck up."
On the menu: Dessert.
She not only gave us an idea of her intentions with the Cookies or Comas mixtape, but she snuck in a preview of what we can expect from the forthcoming ‘Cake or Death’ album.
This is the part where I stop rambling and turn you over to the content.
So...Why Cookies or Comas?
It’s a precursor to ‘Cake or Death.’ A little teaser. So it’s not exactly cakes, because cookies are smaller and comas are not exactly death.
Another reason I wanted to do Cookies or Comas was to do a definite, what i call “rappity rap” and that's for a very specific audience.
I did that and I did it well.
I enjoy doing that, but i know I’m about to move into the area of Cake or Death which is basically love songs and relationships.
I definitely wanted to have Cookies or Comas out there as a reminder...Just so you motherfuckers don’t complain. I'm reminding you that I will eat you the fuck up.
So...Is Cake of Death the first blatant foray into the emotional for Jean Grae?
Yeah its uncomfortable from the first ten seconds in.
You kind of know what world you’re stepping into. Its an uncomfortable album. If you can make it through the content in the songs, you’ll be fine.
I have to learn how to do it(approach emotional topics) in a more responsible way...I’ve had songs like P.S. or Love Venom where it gets into leaving someone’s phone number at the end of the song or putting peoples names in the songs.
It was definitely like that with P.S. It was a very open apology and vulnerable. There’s a better way to do that and eventually I’ve learned better ways to do it.
So...is Blame Game from Cookies and Comas a preview from what we’ll see on Cake or Death?
Blame Game is exactly that. I’m glad its getting the response it’s been getting. People are like 'This is great, can you do more of this?'
I’m like, 'Oh definitely.'
With that said, this is a teaser, we will definitely be back soon with more Jean Grae
Join us in our next issue for photo shoot and an in-depth discussion with Jean about her affiliation with Pharaoh Monche and War Media, and where she stands with Talib Kweli and Blacksmith and a look into her most emotionally charged release to date, ‘Cake or Death.’
